Norway to revive Philippine peace talks

Norway has agreed to try to revive peace talks between the Philippines government and communist rebels. The announcement was made in Oslo in mid-October by Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Petersen after talks with his Philippines counterpart Blas Ople.
Mr Ople said he wanted the rebels to renounce political assassinations as a pre-condition for renewed talks in Norway, which hosted negotiations between the Philippines government and the communist rebels last year.
The Oslo talks were suspended last year after rebel death squads assassinated several local politicians.
