Danish director to head jury at Beijing International Film Festival

Bille August, Academy Award winning Danish film director, will head the jury for the Tiantan competition at this year’s Beijing International Film Festival, which is held on 16 to 23 April 2017.

In 1987 August won both the Palme d’Or, Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his movie Pelle the Conquerer, a movie about a boy, Pelle, who comes to the Danish island of Bornholm in a boat with his father and other Swedish immigrants in hope for a better life. Bille August is also one of the eight, who has won the prestigious Palme d’Or not just once, but twice.

This years Beijing International Film Festival, which was founded in 2011, is held at China National Convention Center and will be screening close to 500 films at 30 cinemas across the city. The Tiantan competition section, which August is jurying, will screen 15 films in total, which have yet to be announced.

August is currently working on a China-set drama called The Chinese Widow, in the story of an American pilot saved by Chinese villagers during the Second World War.
He has also opened a studio in the Chinese city of Hangzhou and serves as a “culture consultant” for the city. Beijing International Film Festival will screen a retrospective of his films.
