As part of the 2016 edition of Penang Island Jazz Festival, Mathias Heise Quadrillion from Denmark will perform on Sunday 4 December, supported by The Embassy of Denmark, Danish Art Foundation, Jazz Danmark, DPA, Danish Jazz Experience and Ren Production CPH. The festival takes place on 1 – 4 December.

Mathias Heise Quadrillion’s unique sound is a combination of chromatic harmonica and new, updated jazz fusion. Jazz harmonies and improvisation are sophisticatedly fused with rock and funk music’s hard-hitting, primal beats into a euphoric, vibrant and very personal expression.

Mathias Heise is one of very few jazz harmonica players in Denmark, blessed with an extraordinary musical talent of dimensions. In 2013, at the age of 20, Mathias became internationally recognized when he won the chromatic harmonica World Championship in Trossingen, Germany, and in January 2015, he was voted ‘New Jazz Star of The Year’ in Denmark.

Despite his young age, Mathias has already played with established names such as Niels Lan Doky, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Ira Coleman, and Danish jazz’ grand old man Hugo Rasmussenen, among others. In 2012, he founded ‘Mathias Heise Quadrillion’ with Mads Christiansen (guitar), David Vang (bass) and Aksel Stadel Borum (drums) and released their debut album “Sudden Ascent” in May 2015 which was instantly picked as ‘Album of The Week’ by DR (Danish Broadcast Corporation) channel ‘P8 Jazz’.

The Danes perform at the ‘Jazz by the beach’ stage, 9.45pm – 10.30pm, on Sunday 4 December.
