Diplomatic anniversary: Finland-China relations 65 years marked with events

The importance of children and youth, and people-to-people exchanges will be emphasized for the development of relations as Finland highlight that 2015 is 65 years since Finland and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations.

The Republic of Finland and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations on 28 October 1950. Finland was one of the first Western countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China and the relations have developed smoothly ever since. By this date, the relations cover numerous fields of cooperation and the two countries are seeking to conclude a new partnership agreement that will pave a way for the future development of the relations.

Children and youth, and people-to-people exchanges have been recognized especially important by Finland and China for the flourishing relations in the coming decades. Thus, children and youth will be a special guest group in many of the anniversary years’ events and there will be a variety of cultural events organized both in China and in Finland.

As an example, Finnish orchestras, led by Symphony Lahti in May, will play the music of Jean Sibelius, the national composer of Finland, in China during this year that is the 150th anniversary of his birth. Also, the biggest ever presentation of Chinese culture in Finland, China Focus, that brings hundreds of Chinese artists to Finland, will happen in August at Helsinki Festival.

To highlight the anniversary years’ activities, a special Finland-China relations 65 years logo has been created and will mark the related events and communications. The elements of the logo are simple but with a rich meaning: despite of a far distance, Finland and China are linked by mountains and rivers, and the friendship between the two nations goes back for generations. Looking to the future, the countries will further develop the partnership and collaboration in order to achieve new progress with joint efforts. The logo has also been inspired by Pure Finland campaign that successfully showcased Finnish-Chinese collaboration in China in 2014.
