The Swedish Young Professionals in China (YP) organized their first Swedish Career Fair on Saturday the 18th of April in Shanghai and the following Saturday, April 25th in Beijing in cooperation with the Swedish Spirit of Innovation. The aim was to increase the visibility of both large and small Swedish companies, and enable interaction for them with potential employees residing in China. Furthermore it created a forum for Swedish companies to reach both foreign and Chinese talents.

The career fair came to be the largest Swedish-Chinese career fair ever to be held, with 20 companies exhibiting in Shanghai and 14 exhibitors in Beijing; among them ABB, IKEA, SKF, Volvo, Alfa Laval, Atlas Copco, Visit Sweden and Ericsson. Attracting more than 800 visitors in Shanghai and more than 500 visitors to Beijing respectively during the course of each day. The career fair is also the largest event ever to be held under the banner of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China.

The event received very positive response from visitors in a survey conducted in both cities after the event, with more than 80% of visitors stating that they would recommend the event to others in the future. Visitors also wished that for future editions there would be a larger amount of participating companies, and from even more sectors, such as companies within pharmaceuticals, design and retail.

The survey further gauged visitors’ backgrounds, employer expectations, knowledge of Swedish companies, and interests and goals for their future. While the survey results showed a similar level of knowledge about Swedish companies for the two locations, with the larger Swedish companies being the ones that are mostly recognized as Swedish, there were some clear differences with regards to the education level, choice of major, salary expectations and career priorities between the visitors.

YP hopes to make the fair into a reoccurring annual event, providing a new member benefit for all of the Swedish Chamber’s member companies. We hope that the member companies will join us next year in creating a longstanding platform for promoting Swedish employers and talents in China and building long-term relations!
