How does $200 million dollars look like? For Swedish shipping company Stena Bulk the answer will be 3 new chemical and product tankers from Chinese shipyard CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering (CSSC OME).

With 18 separate cargo tanks, each 3000 m2, the vessels are designed for IMO2 cargoes while being able to transport both vegetable oils as well as oil and petroleum products. In combination with advanced systems for loading, discharging and tank cleaning, the IMOIIMAX vessels offer flexibility in cargo logistics few competitors can match.

Along with the order of 3 Chinese 50,000 dwt IMOIIMAX MR tankers, Stena Bulk has also taken out an option on a further two vessels. The first delivery is planned for the end of 2017 after which the vessels will be delivered at 3-monthly intervals.

Stena Bulk already has a good experience with Chinese CSSC OME, since the Swedish company ordered ten chemical and product tankers in 2012.

“We are very satisfied with the performance of the IMOIIMAX tankers and are thus adding to this part of our fleet still further. With their greater efficiency as regards fuel consumption and cargo, these vessels are also environmentally superior compared to many other vessels in their class, which, of course, is a major advantage. Commercially, they are a good complement to our fleet”, says Erik Hånell, CEO of Stena Bulk.

The vessels in the IMOIIMAX series are among the most sophisticated on the market and are at the forefront in terms of both energy efficiency and cargo flexibility. Thanks to a completely new hull design and a newly developed main engine, together with a number of other technical innovations, the vessels’ fuel consumption has been reduced by 10-20 percent.

The vessels now ordered are of the same type as the previous order they placed in 2012. All the IMOIIMAX tankers will be deployed in Stena Bulk’s Danish joint venture, Stena Weco.
