Telenor is confronting child labour in Myanmar

Telenor has found 19 confirmed and suspected cases of underage labourers in its supply chain as part of its ongoing sustainability initiatives, according to Telenor Myanmar CEO Petter Furberg.

While the Norwegian teleco is on pace to launch mobile services in Myanmar in late September, it has also looked to address issues such as corruption, land issues, health and safety and conflict areas that company officials said were flagged as potential issues from the beginning.

“We also know there are a lot of issues that come with these technologies. These are opportunities but on the other side there are risk factors,” said Telenor CEO and president Jon Fredrik Baksaas in an online sustainability presentation the firm hosted on August 19.
