Until recently Myanmar and its domestic market was viewed as a “no-go” zone for Western companies. However, as a consequence of democratic reforms the EU has lifted all economic sanctions and now actively encourages Western companies to trade and invest in Myanmar. Against this background the Danish VIKING company now sees good reason to start approaching the potentially large and soon-to-be-growing local market.

VIKING is a market leading provider of maritime and industrial safety solutions, founded and headquartered in Esbjerg, Denmark. The company currently employs 1,650 staff worldwide and runs equipment production facilities in four countries: Denmark, Norway, USA, and Thailand. Unique to VIKING is also its vast global network of service centers, which includes 60 branch offices and 270 certified servicing stations worldwide.

The organiser of the VIKING seminar, Myanmar-Nordic Liaison Ltd., is a new company by three experienced Danish professionals, aiming to assist foreign companies throughout the process of engaging in business with Myanmar. The company offers a wide range of services such as determining ideal setups for companies, business facilitation, agency, market evaluations, and identifying credible local partners and investment projects.

Among the attendees of the days’ session were ‘heavyweights’ such as the state-owned MOGE (Myanma Oil & Gas Enterprise) and business conglomerate MEC (Myanmar Economic Corporation), as well as global offshore-companies in the oil & gas-business, mining companies, cruise lines and others. Following introductory remarks by Myanmar-Nordic Liaison’s Mr. Bjarke Manniche Nielsen, a thorough presentation was given by VIKING Regional Sales Manager Mr. Philip Leong, visiting from VIKING’s regional headquarters in Singapore. A delicious buffet and eager interaction concluded the day’s presentations of VIKING Life-Saving Equipment at Chatrium Hotel, Yangon.
