Chinese Journalist Visits Swedish War Hero

Chief Writer at China Newsweek visited the Raoul Wallenberg Institute on its two-day long centenary event in Lund on 24-25 April.

Ms. Liu Wanyuan, a journalist at Newsweek in Beijing, visited the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and covered the Raoul Wallenberg centenary event held in Lund, Sweden. Ms. Wanyuan also met with Mr Anderas Ljungholm, Head of the Asia Unit at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute to learn about the Institute’s programs in China.

The event aimed to highlight Raoul Wallenberg’s remarkable courage and how his legacy continues to be an inspiration to individuals and groups working for the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.
By saving the lives of over tens of thousands Hungarian Jews during the end of the Second World War in Budapest in 1944-45, Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish war hero has made one of the last century’s most remarkable achievements in humanity.

Distinguished guests such as Former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi A. Annan, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navi Pillay and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict and Chairman of the Lund University Board, Ms. Margot Wallström took part in the event.

In 2012 the Swedish Government has decided to organize a number of activities – both in Sweden and internationally – to commemorate Raoul Wallenberg’s legacy and the continued need for tolerance and promotion of human rights.
