‘Hedda Gabler’ was written by Henrik Ibsen in 1890. The work is about a woman whose life is flighty but she has a great ambition. She finds all ways to affirm her value regardless of the right to life and happiness of other people. Building the heroine, Ibsen wanted to criticise the individual heroism which began to spread in Europe at his time. Via his heroine, Henrik Ibsen wanted to express his opinion ‘the biggest obstacle is the life’s lie and weak character.’
The Vietnam Drama Theatre said that it was the first time a work of Henrik Ibsen has been staged in Vietnam with a translation by Duong Tuong. The drama will be staged in a simple and classic manner. Actress Lan Huong will cast Hedda Gabler. Especially, Ibsen, a character outside the drama, cast by Artist of Merit Nguyen Anh Dung, director of the Vietnam Drama Theatre, will attend the drama to introduce his work.
‘Hedda Gabler’ will make its debut in Vietnam on October 20 and then will be staged to welcome a visit of a Royal delegation from Norway. The Vietnam Drama Theatre said that it would be a rehearsal for the drama before it will attend a festival to mark the 100th death anniversary of Henrik Ibsen in Oslo, Norway, in 2006.
Norway was reported to have organised a festival of dramas by Henrik Ibsen which are staged by foreign countries in 2002 in preparation for the 2006 festival. ‘Hedda Gabler’ staged by the Vietnam Drama Theatre is hoped to make a contribution to the success of the festival.
