Poverty has often forced Vietnamese fishermen into unsustainable exploitation of the ocean’s resources. During the last decade Vietnamese fish stocks have been under increasing pressure due to unsustainable exploitation of the seabed’s flora and fauna.
But this has changed through the help of the Danish supported Fishery Sector Programme, assistance which has contributed to strengthening the fishermen’s ability to manage fish production, thereby making it possible to expand production without destroying the marine environment.
The poor fishermen who have received training have experienced notable increases in income of 25 percent annually, in several cases even more.
