Danida supported a seminar in Hanoi where 50 lawyers were trained on the new Vietnamese law which recognises clear rights to people living with HIV/AIDS.
The new law states that people living with HIV/AIDS have fundamental rights such as the right to work, to go to school, and not to be discriminated against. They also have the right to free legal aid.
“It means a lot to people living with HIV/AIDS to have their rights recognized in the law. The next step is to ensure the implementation of their rights. To see this happen, it is important that lawyers know about these rights,” says Ms. Trinh Thi Le Tram, lawyer and director of the newly established Consulting Centre on Law and Policy on Health and HIV/AIDS.
Besides training lawyers on the new HIV/AIDS law, the seminar also brought attention to the new Centre where people living with HIV/AIDS can receive legal advice and assistance when they experience difficulties or have questions relating to their rights and responsibilities.
