Denmark has granted 3.000.000 DKK to Mekong River Commission

Denmark has granted 3.000.000 DKK to capacity building activities in the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS) as part of the implementation of the recommendations from an Independent Organisational, Institutional and Financial Review carried our late 2006. Ambassador Peter Lysholt Hansen and the Officer-in-Charge of the MRCS signed the agreement on October 5, 2007.
At the International Conference on the Mekong River Commission, held in Hanoi 23-24 April 2006, the Danish co-host Mrs. Ulla Tørnæs, Minister for Development Cooperation, pledged 3 million DKK (USD 549,000) to the implementation of the recommendations of the Independent Organisational, Financial and Institutional Review of the MRC Secretariat and the National Mekong Committees (NMCs) organisation with up to 3 million Danish Kroner (530,000 USD) in support of capacity building activities in the MRC Secretariat.
The review proposed 38 recommendations to the improvement of the MRC Secretariat and the National Mekong Committees, which the donors welcomed and committed to support at the International Conference on the Mekong River Commission. The support will build the necessary capacity in order for the MRC Secretariat and NMCs to undertake its mission as key provider of knowledge and information, technical support and as a promoter of policies and investments.
The additional Danish funds will support three areas such as strengthening the MRC Management Capacity especially on Integrated Water Resource Management, specifying common guidelines, roles and responsibilities of the MRCS, NMC and MRC and in-depth analysis of long-term core function and staff policies of the MRCS.
The MRC was established in 1995 by the governments of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia and aims to promote a sustainable, joint management and economic growth of their shared water resources. Denmark is currently the largest donor to the MRC.
