Mærsk-Broström Fusion Causes Singaporean Layoffs

The fusion between the Danish and the Swedish shipping giants will lead to major structural adjustment in the two concerns, for example in Singapore where the local Broström office is going to be reduced.

According to the chief operation officer in AP Møller-Mærsk, Kristian Mørch, the approximate number of sacked employees would be around 70, but having said that he assures that the fusion will also create new jobs.

“With this strategy we can create two leading brands in product-tankers and getting a simple and effective organisation, which will provide a better service for our customers. The structural changes will strengthen our competitiveness” he says.

The Mærsk-Broström fusion, including its new activities and the structural chances, is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
