Swedish Social Democrats Meet Aung San Suu Kyi

Two Swedish politicians, Urban Ahlin and Olle Thorell, visited last week the Burmese opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi in the home where she was held in custody for many years.
The two politicians are both members of the Social Democratic Party of Sweden. Ahlin is sposkesman for foreign affairs of the party and Thorell is head of of the foreign committee of the Swedish Parliament.
After the visit the two politicians left for Sweden.
According to their report of the visit, the three of them discussed the political situation in Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi had stressed the importance of maintaining the sanctions against the current military regime. Aung San Suu Kyi also expresse distress that sseveral EU countries had not expressed their support of continued sanctions against Myanmarr.
Ahlin said after the visit:
“What we have seen so far is that the generals take off the uniform and dress up like politicians. Nothing has reeally changed.”
“The Swedish government should take the initiative in EU to ensure that the sanctions are maintained in a meaningful way,” he adds.
