Beijing IKEA site fire causes no casualties

A fire that broke out in an under-construction IKEA site in Beijing’s Daxing District on Friday evening has been controlled, and there are no casualties, the city’s fire department has said.

The department said they received an alarm at 7:34 p.m., and 15 fire trucks were dispatched to extinguish the fire immediately.

According to Shanghai Daily, a worker on the site told Xinhua that some flammable building materials had been stored in the building.

With an investment of at least 3 billion yuan (800 million U.S. dollars), the “Inter IKEA Center” is intended to become the largest IKEA store in the world.

The center, designed to feature food retailers, home furnishing, electronics and entertainment, has a total floor space of 194,000 square meters.

The Swedish IKEA Group, the world’s largest home products retailer, has more than 300 stores in 38 countries around the world.

There are three Inter IKEA Centers under construction in China, including the one in Beijing. The other two are in central Hubei Province and Wuxi City in eastern Jiangsu Province.

The center in Beijing was scheduled to open in 2014.
