“Heartbound”, in Danish “Hjertelandet”, follows Thai-Danish couples in a sparsely populated region of Denmark called Thy. The documentary is made by Sine Plambech and Janus Metz, who have followed the families in 10 years.

The documentary revolves around Sommai, a former sex worker from Pattaya, who came to Denmark 25 years ago to marry Niels. Ever since, she has helped women from her village in Thailand to marry Danish men.

One of these women is Sommai’s niece, Kae. The audience also get to know another young woman, Saeng, who must provide for her son by working in the sex bars in Pattaya because Sommai can not help her get a Danish husband.

The documentary is a continuation of Metz and Plambech’s collaboration on their films from 2008, ‘Love on Delivery’ and ‘Ticket to Paradise’ about the same people.

“Heartbound” was first shown during the Toronto International Film Festival in the beginning of September.
