Norway’s very own 900 years old Nidaros Cathedral Men and Boys Choir (Nidarosdomens Guttekor) wll on 20 and 21 October 2017 perform at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The Choir’s wide repertoire of traditional and classical works, including the choral repertoire staple Messa di Gloria by Giacomo Puccini, is enchanting to say the least. This is also the first time this Mass composed for a full orchestra and 8-part choir is performed in its entirety in Singapore. Audiences will also be treated to Norwegian folk songs that is rarely heard in Singapore.

Nidarosdomens Guttekor originates from the Norwegian city of Trondheim. The choir represents a tradition of boy and men cathedral choristers in the Nidaros Cathedral that dates back to the 11th century. When Norwegian and English stonemasons arrived in Trondheim to build the Christchurch, a precursor to the Nidaros Cathedral, they would bring their family with them and settle in the village. Priests then taught the boys Gregorian liturgy taught them to read and write and participating in church services, originating the modern boys choir tradition of the cathedral we see today.
The choir is also active outside of the cathedral and serves as cultural ambassadors of Norway at international events. Nidarosdomens Guttekor also sings in Coronations, State and Royal events apart from their tours and concerts. On 31 October, just days after the Singapore Tour, the choir will be singing for HM the King and the Royal Family in Norway’s State celebration of 500th Anniversary of Reformation at Nidaros Cathedral.
