Despite the government’s effort in transforming the Chinese economy towards the “new normal”, traditional growth drivers like investment and manufacturing continue to play a crucial role. The heavy reliance on credit expansion among Chinese corporates intensifies the medium-term risks in the Chinese economy. Equity market volatility during the summer is likely to have limited direct impacts on the economy because of its small size. Without any big downside surprise in growth, the CNY is likely to be stable vs the USD in the coming months due to the SDR inclusion.
