Finnish racer Kimi Räikkönen was second at the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The Finnish Lotus driver was just over a minute behind Ferrari racer Fernando Alonso of Spain. Räikkönen won the Chinese race back in 2007, when he was a Ferrari driver, going on to win that season title. This time he started in second position, dropping to fourth before moving back up to second.
Räikkönen saw his hopes of victory suffer a dent when he collided with McLaren’s Sergio Perez, and was forced to drive much of the race with a damaged front nose and wing
Another Finn in the race, Williams team rookie Valtteri Bottas, finished 13th out of a field of 22 drivers. He had started in 16th place. Finnish-German racer Nico Rosberg, who started in fourth, was one of four competitors who failed to complete the nearly 5500-kilometre race.
Meanwhile at the Rally of Portugal in Loule, Finnish drivers went into Sunday’s legs of the race in second and third place. Jari-Matti Latvala was about 35 seconds behind his Volkswagen Polo teammate Sebastien Ogier of France.
Mikko Hirvonen of the Citroën stable was third, just over a minute behind Ogier. Hirvonen is hunting his first world championship title at the age of 32.
After 13 of 15 legs of the race, Ogier remained in the lead, now with Hirvonen moving into second place, just 49 seconds behind the leader. Latvala had dropped into third, more than four minutes behind the Frenchman. Another Finn, Skoda driver Esapekka Lappi, was in ninth place, more than 13 off Ogier’s pace.
Ogier held on to win the contest, 58 seconds ahead of Hirvonen and more than four minutes ahead of Latvala.
