Swedish documentary wins an Oscars

Searching for Sugar Man, a Swedish-British production about a lost relic of the American folk scene, was announced a winner of the best documentary Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards on Feb 25.

Best documentary: Searching for Sugar Man, about 70s singer Sixto Rodriguez.

Directed by Swedish film maker Malik Bendjelloul, the film charts the life of the obscure 70s singer Sixto Rodriguez, whose work went on to provide the soundtrack for the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

Bendjelloul’s film reveals how Rodriguez’s South African fans initially assumed that their idol had died – before discovering he was actually working as a builder in Detroit.

The success of the film has already helped rejuvenate his singing career. Rodriguez was forced to skip the Baftas earlier this month because he was playing a concert in Cape Town.
