Thai Airways cancelled all its flights for Europe on 27-28 February 2019 to avoid Pakistan and northern India.
Thai Airways has 13 routes to Europe and it was forced to cancel its flights from Bangkok to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and other 10 flights to Europe including Moscow, Rome, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Vienna and Zurich.
Several international airlines operating flights from East Asia to destinations in Europe included Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, flydubai, Gulf Air, SriLankan Airlines, Air Canada, Eva Air, Singapore Airlines, British Airways were affected and had to reroute flights as well.
Following airline cancellations, hundreds of passengers were left stranded in chaos at Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Sumeth Damrongchaitham, Thai Airways president affirmed the cancellations and the urgent meeting was held to reschedule the flights.
“By closing the airspace, every flight from Thailand to Europe has been affected. For flights that are going to depart this evening, we will call an urgent meeting to consider the impact of such events,” he said.
