A Thai anti-junta rap group called “Rap Against Dictatorship” has been awarded the winner of the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent.
The award ceremony will take place during the Oslo Freedom Forum that will be held in Oslo, Norway from May 27 – May 29.
Established in 2012 by the New York City-based Human Rights Foundation (HRF), Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent has been giving its prizes every year to individuals “who engage in creative dissent, exhibiting courage and creativity to challenge injustice and live in truth,” HRF stated in its website.
This year, the winner is “Rap Against Dictatorship” Thai anti-junta rap group whose song “Prathet Ku Mee”, or “My Country’s Got” in English has received over 63 million views on Youtube at the time of writing.
The song reflects the frustrations from the political situation in Thailand since 2014, the year the Thai army took over the country.
“My Country’s Got” also raised the political awareness amongst Thais especially the young generation who felt encouraged to express thier opinion and feeling on Thai political situation after listening the song.
According to the band’s official page, two members of the group namely Liberate P and Jacoboi are the band’s representatives who are now flying to Norway to attend the award ceremony.
