THAILAND
Thailand has lost many of its Finnish expats after corporations moved to Singapore. However, recently many of the corporations are seeing the new improved Bangkok. A new airport, sky train and underground have provided the Big Mango with a real infrastructure attracting Finns in growing numbers.
ScandAsia was delighted to witness the birth of the first Finnish society in Bangkok. The society was established to unite the individual units such as the Ladie’s Club and Bansku school. The Chairman for the new society is Tero Norjanen.
MALAYSIA
The Malaysian Scandinavian Society hosts an annual Crayfish party which attracts many Scandinavians. Swedish Bo Jeansson is President of the society.
The Malaysian Finnish Society also serves the Finns in Malaysia. The society publishes the Aatu magazine with lots of information on coming events.
SINGAPORE
Singapore is home to almost 100 Finnish or Finnish related organizations. As a result the Finnish society is well served in Singapore. Kirsi Korpela is the contact person within the Finnish Business Council. The business council publishes its quarterly magazine, Finnlink.
The Finnish society, SiSu, is led by chairperson Ira Haimi. The society is socially driven with its entertainment, culture and sports divisions. There is also a playgroup for the younger family members.
INDONESIA
The Nordic Club in Jakarta, Indonesia serves all Nordic citizens. However they also have frequent Finnish gatherings that see about 50 participants. The Finnish contact person in the Nordic Club is Co-President Sanna Massala.
The IFBC has been inactive for the last 3 years. Esa Hurtig, who was recently appointed to lead the council, is currently trying to revive the council.
PHILIPPINES
The Philippines sees some Finnish activity, the Philippine–Finland association is active and attracts many members. The social activities of the association are however not as vibrant as the business section.
VIETNAM
The Nordic Chamber of Commerce Vietnam represents all Nordic countries. The council regularly hosts social events for its members.
