Danes to Attend Official Tsunami Memorial

On Monday December 26 – exactly one year after the Tsunami killed 46 Danes – several memorial ceremonies will be held in Thailand with other visiting Danish tourists among the attendees, but the official gathering will take place in Khao Lak national park. The ceremony will be attended by government representatives from various countries, but also by approximately 35 Danes who are on their way from Denmark right now. Most of them are either survivors and/or relatives to some of the Danish victims, and they have been invited by the Thai government.

These Boxing Day memorial events are a Thai arrangement, and the low amount of attending Danes is most likely due to the fact that a separate Danish memorial ceremony was conducted in April on the beach of Khao Lak in honor of the Danish Tsunami victims in Thailand and Sri Lanka. In addition to the 35 attending Danes, Denmark will be officially represented by Denmark’s ambassador in Bangkok.

Back in Denmark, the Red Cross will also host a memorial service at the Trinity Church in Copenhagen at 10am on Monday.
