Mohammed Cartoon Uproar Surfaces In The Philippines

In a square in Cotabato – approximately 930 kilometers south of Manila – more than 5,000 Muslims united earlier on Tuesday to show their condemnation of the Danish cartoon drawings of their prophet Mohammed. Defying what the called the “blasphemous acts” of the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, who was the first to publish the drawings, the Muslims burned the Danish flag in front of armed police, reports Ritzau. One of the Muslim leaders in the protesting crowd urged President Gloria Arroyo to cut all diplomatic ties with Denmark and he encouraged everyone to boycott Danish products.

Muslims are a minority in the predominantly Roman-Catholic country, but militant Muslim rebels have been fighting for three decades for independence in the southern part of the Philippines.
