Successful Danish oil & gas charm offensive in KL

It is the first time the Embassy has organized an event of this type comprising both general meetings and dedicated, individual business-to-business meetings between the delegation and local companies within the oil & gas sector. The objective of the forum in general was to form relationships between Malaysian and Danish companies in the oil and gas industry and in particular providing the opportunity for Danish companies to have high profile meetings with the Malaysian national oil & gas company PETRONAS and its partners.

The forum kicked off with a general introduction and presentations by high level managers from PETRONAS as well as meetings with technical staff to provide an insight into the business potential and opportunities within the thriving Malaysian oil & gas sector. The general part of the programme also included a visit to Hess, one of the big oil companies in Malaysia, and to Murphy which is one of PETRONAS’ important partners.

“Before the forum commenced, profiles of each of the participating Danish companies had been sent to PETRONAS, its subsidiaries, partners and a large number of companies in the Malaysian oil & gas industry”, Commercial Counsellor Mr. Bo Mønsted explains.

“On the basis of these introductions, one-on-one business meetings were organized for all participating  meetings were organised with the sole purpose of introducing prospective partners and for them to explore common interests and potential for collaboration in oil & gas projects. More importantly, specific and more focused meetings were also arranged with the custodian of all petroleum resources in Malaysia, PETRONAS, and major players in the Malaysian oil & gas industry”, says Mr. Bo Mønsted.

“I believe that we managed to establish or reinforce some strong links between the Danish companies and PETRONAS which may generate good business opportunities in the long run – however, only time will tell. We managed to hold around 60 meetings between key decision makers and probable business partners during the 3 days of the forum, a feat which was only possible because we managed to get a lot more focus from PETRONAS and the local oil & gas industry by being a big group rather than individual companies”, says a relaxed Mr. Bo Mønsted after the event.

After the forum the embassy could get rather busy helping the Danish companies on the following-up to pursue the various areas of opportunities identified as not all companies have a representation in Malaysia (yet). The following Danish companies participated: Maersk Contractors (Denmark), Maersk Supply Services (Singapore), Densit (Malaysia), SvitserWijsmuller (Singapore ), Ramboll Oil & Gas (Denmark), Semco Maritime A/S (Denmark), BWSC (Denmark) and Brüel & Kjær Vibro (Denmark).

One follow-up event which was discussed between the Embassy and the Danish delegation may well be to hold a technical seminar on Danish offshore competencies and individual meeting programmes with key decision makers in conjunction with a Danish pavilion in the Asian Oil & Gas Exhibition in June 2007.

The forum was organized by the Royal Danish Embassy in cooperation with the Confederation of Danish Industries and Danish Offshore Industry.
