Like Sweden, both men and women should be given the option to take time off to look after the children in Malaysia, said Maria Chin Abdullah, Women’s Development Collective (WDC) executive director reported on 3 August, 2007.
“Women should not be stereotypes as the ones to look after the family,” she said, “It should also not be a case where women and men should lose their seniority or pay. They should be able to rejoin the workforce and be reinstated to their original positions with the same pay,” she added.
Sophia Lim, Vice President of All Women’s Action Society of Malaysia (AWAM) said, “The advantages of putting these measures into place means men can take advantage of the measures as well.” Also that, “This will enable them to play a bigger role in bringing up their children,” she added.
