Norway To Assist RP Draft New Shipping Law

The
Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Department of
Transportation and Communications of the Philippines (DOTC) have entered into
an Agreement on the Formulation of an Omnibus Philippine Merchant Shipping Act.

    Recently the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the
Department of Transportation and Communications of the Philippines (DOTC)
entered into an Agreement on the Formulation of an Omnibus Philippine Merchant
Shipping Act. The cooperation agreement, signed by Ambassador Ståle T. Risa and
Secretary Leandro R. Mendoza, provides a grant of Norwegian kroner 2 250 000
(approx. Peso 18 million), to be used for the development of a new and modern
maritime legislation, to meet the requirements and obligations of the maritime
authorities and industries of the Philippines.
    DOTC, will
be responsible for implementing the project, working in close collaboation with
the Norwegian Maritime Directorate (NMD) which will act as the project partner
institution. The project is to be completed within 12 months and result in the
presentation of a “draft” of a new omnibus merchant shipping act. It is
envisioned that the “draft” could serve as the basis for future work on a bill
in Congress.
