The NGO Health Worker Migration Initiative (HWMI), a partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Health Workforce Alliance, and Realizing Rights, recently lauded the Philippines for its migration scheme for health sector workers. In a summit recently held in Norway, the HWMI cited the Philippines’ health workers management program where full support is given to migrating health workers from pre-departure to reintegration upon return to the Philippines and called the program “a model worth emulating.”
The entire cycle of management was recognised – from the initial stage of providing training and developing expertise in the medical fields, to assistance before departure, while in the destination countries, until their return to Philippine society, where they are provided reintegration support such as capital and retooling skills.
