Vietnamese Teenagers to Join the Stockholm Junior Water Prize

Do Ngoc Linh and Ma Thi Thuy Tra, two students of Grade 11 from the northern province of Thai Nguyen, won the First Prize at the 7th National Contest, called Improving Water Usage and Protecting Water Resources. The two girls will bring to Stockholm their comic book with scientific information and messages to raise the public’s awareness on water resource conservation.

A ceremony was held in Hanoi on June 7 to present awards to the winners of the 2010 National Contest, which received more than 750 entries from 13 provinces and cities of Vietnam. Minister Marie Ottosson, the Head of the Development Cooperation Section at the Embassy of Sweden was among the guests of honour at the ceremony. she was kindly invited to the stage to present the awards to Second Prize winners.


Ms Ottosson congratulated all the winners and voiced her hope that the First Prize winners will have a fruitful week in Stockholm where they can share their ideas and experience with their peers from all over the world.


When asked why they had chosen the topic, Do Ngoc Linh said: “I like reading books very much and I learnt that there has been no books with scientific information about water resource conservation. So my friend and I decided to develop a comic book with information about environmental protection in general and water resource conservation in particular.”


The two First Prize Winners said that going to Sweden has been their dreams since they were little girls.


A national contest as such has been held annually by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment since 2003 with financial support from the Embassy of Sweden. This year, the contest received support from the Canon Singapore.
