SINGAPORE : A SilkAir flight attendant who hurt an Indonesian maid was jailed for two months on Thursday.
28-year-old Siti Farhana Mhd Yahkup and her husband, Mohammed Szami At’tirmidzi Supa’at, had hit the maid after they heard their daughter crying.
The court heard that the couple’s 7-year-old daughter had stepped on a needle in their Pasir Ris flat on November 30, 2008.
Siti Farhana got angry and held the maid’s head and pushed it against the wall several times.
Later, she also punched her maid on her chest several times.
Her husband also kicked the maid on her shin.
Siti Farhana faced two charges of causing hurt.
Her husband compounded his offence by paying the maid compensation.
Siti Farhana was also fined $5,000 for using her sister’s name to illegally employ a maid in September 2007.
She could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for each of the causing hurt offences.
Her offence under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act is punishable with a fine not exceeding $15,000 and/or jail for up to 12 months. –
