Skaidi in China and Mongolia

The duo Skaidi is set to embark on a tour in China from the 4th to the 9th of October, visiting Beijing, Tianjin, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. The Asia tour also includes performances at the Giant Steppes Jazz Festival 2010 in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia from the 30th of September to the 2nd of October.

In the duo Skaidi, Steinar Raknes and Inga Juuso bring together jazz and yoik, a traditional folksong among the Sami peoples in the extreme north of the European continent. The unusual mix has created a new, unrefined expression that transcends both traditions. For ten years the two artists have performed together in various ensembles. Nevertheless, they both retain their individual ways of creating music. The encounter between two musical traditions is laced with elegance, depth and humour, and with a heart for the music. The duo will be accompanied on their tour by Steinar Raknes Quartet.

Inga Juuso is one of Scandinavia’s leading yoikers and uses a self-taught traditional technique. She is unique in being the only full-time professional yoiker in the world. She has collaborated on several CD recordings and is also an experienced actor.

Steinar Raknes is one of Norway’s foremost jazz bassists and songwriters. He is often compared with the legendary bassist and songwriter Charles Mingus. He is known for his work as composer and musician in the award-winning jazz trio Urban Connection, and for collaborations with artists such as Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Steve Grossman and Per Texas Johansson.
