2 dead in Southern Thailand Attacks

A former local leader and an assistant village chief have been killed in a spate of gun attacks across southern Pattani province.

Five others were wounded in the attacks.

Suding Arbu, 46, a former chairman of the Muang Tia tambon administration organisation, was found dead inside a bullet-riddled pickup truck on the side of a road linking Yala with Pattani in tambon Mohmawi, Yarang district, about 3.30am yesterday.

Police said yesterday an unknown number of assailants sprayed the victims’ vehicle with bullets. About 20 spent shells from AK-47 and M16 rifles were collected from the scene.

Also in Yarang, Matorhae Tanyongmas, an assistant village chief, was shot dead and two other villagers injured in a gun attack about 10pm on Sunday.

Matorhae, 50, was attacked by armed men while riding a motorcycle.
