New Agreement on Flood Forecasting

Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines, H. E. Knut Solem, witnessed together with Secretary of Science and Technology, Hon. Mario G. Montejo, on the 11th of November the signing of an institutional agreement between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).

The agreement implements a project aimed at improving the flood forecasting and warning systems for the Magat and Cagayan river basins and was signed by Officer in Charge of PAGASA, Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando and Director of NVE, Mr. Kjell Repp. The goal of the project is to save lives and reduce damage to properties due to repeated flooding in the downstream municipalities of Magat and Cagayan rivers. The project is implemented under the Memorandum of Agreement signed in November last year between The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the Department of Science and Technology.

Present at the ceremony were representatives from the Norwegian hydropower company SN Power, which is also involved in the project through its Corporate Social Responsibility program. Both Ambassador Solem and Secretary Montejo expressed in their speeches their deep appreciation for the cooperation project and the way it further enhances Norwegian-Philippine bilateral relations.
