Grete Maersk Grounded in Southern Vietnam

Grete Maersk, a Danish ship, has been grounded in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau since Tuesday.

A Danish container ship weighing 115,000 tons has been grounded in the southern resort town of Vung Tau, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province, since Tuesday.

The Grete Maersk was on its way from Malaysia to a local port when the captain turned the wheel abruptly to avoid collission with a fishing boat.

Due to a strong wind, the 367-meter long vessel ran into a coastal sand bank and has been grounded ever since.

Efforts by Vung Tau’s port authorities to free the ship have so far been unsuccessful due to low tide and the ship’s weight, according to local officials.

Grete Maersk is one of the largest ships to have ever docked at Ba Ria – Vung Tau’s ports, VnExpress reported.
