The tournament is expected to become an annual event, with the purpose of increasing the awareness of Denmark and Carlsberg among the citizens of Chongqing. In addition, the tournament supports ‘Healthy Chongqing’ which is the local government’s strategy aiming at making its citizens more physically active.
This year’s Denmark Carlsberg Cup was made up of 32 teams with a total of nearly 300 football players participating in two leagues – one for university students and one for state-owned enterprises. 62 matches were played in total. After a sunny weekend with fun and great football, Chongqing Daily Newspaper Group was victorious in the state-owned enterprise league, while Chongqing University was the best team in the university league.
Hans Halskov, Consul at the Royal Danish Consulate in Chongqing, and the initiator behind the tournament said:
“Football is a global sport, and Denmark has proud football traditions which football enthusiasts in China respect. We have organized an event of high quality with many Danish elements and I’m certain that the many local participants had a great weekend on and off the pitch.”
Trophies, medals and even footballs from Select were brought in from Denmark, while the main prize was gift certificates from Danish Jack & Jones. Two lucky winners from each winning team also won a football trip to Liverpool. The Royal Danish Consulate and Carlsberg experienced massive media coverage in the local press and great support from the local government and Chongqing Football Association.
