Finland’s Deputy Head of Mission in Indonesia, Teemu Laakkonen, represented the Jakarta Dragons at the City of Heroes ice hockey tournament in Surabaya.
The tournament was held from 14 to 17 August 2026 and brought together Indonesian teams and players from abroad for four days of competition.
Laakkonen serves as Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Finnish Embassy in Jakarta. He has previously described ice hockey as a Finnish pastime he wanted to continue while posted in Indonesia.
The embassy welcomed the growing interest in ice hockey in Indonesia, describing the tournament as an example of gotong royong, the Indonesian tradition of cooperation and mutual assistance.
Although Indonesia’s tropical climate offers few natural opportunities for the sport, ice hockey clubs have developed in cities including Jakarta and Surabaya. The Jakarta Dragons are part of this growing community.
Ice hockey is one of Finland’s most popular sports and an important part of the country’s sporting culture.
