Finnish environmental scientist Elias Hakalehto has received the highest recognition awarded by the International Society of Environmental Indicators.
The Fellowship Award was presented during the society’s 25th International Conference on Environmental Indicators, held in Beijing from 26 to 29 July.
As Hakalehto was unable to receive the award himself, Olli Suominen, Counsellor for Education and Science at the Embassy of Finland in Beijing, accepted it on his behalf.
Hakalehto serves as the society’s Vice President for Europe and Africa and is an adjunct professor at the Universities of Helsinki and Eastern Finland. He is also the founder of Finnish biotechnology company Finnoflag, which develops microbial solutions for converting waste and industrial side streams into resources such as energy, chemicals and organic fertilisers.
According to the society, its Fellowship is awarded in recognition of professional achievements in environmental indicators and service to the organisation.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Suominen highlighted Hakalehto’s long-standing emphasis on developing a shared understanding of how the world’s natural resources can be used responsibly.
He also congratulated Hakalehto on behalf of the Finnish Embassy.
