Miss Universe 2018: The Philippines won, Nordics not in top 20

Catriona Gray from the Philippines took home the crown at the beauty contest Miss Universe, that took place in Bangkok, Thailand on 17 December. Contestants from the Nordic countries did not make it into top 20.

Women from 94 countries competed to become Miss Universe 2018. Southeast Asia was well represented among the finalists with winner Catriona Gray from the Philippines, H’Hen Niê from Vietnam in top 5 and Sophida Kanchanarin from Thailand in top 10.

The Nordics were represented by Emma Strandberg from Sweden, Susanne Næss Guttorm from Norway, Helena Heuser from Denmark and Alina Voronkova from Finland. None of them made the cut to top 20, but the final had a little Scandinavian twist anyway.

At the Miss Universe contest, winner Catriona Gray was reunited with her Miss World 2016 friends – Denmark’s Helena Heuser and Sweden’s Emma Strandberg. They were among the first to congratulate her, when she became Miss Universe 2018, according to Pep.ph.

“I am speechless sister, and I can’t stop crying. I am so happy for you. You did it cat! You did it! I am so proud and glad that YOU are standing there with the new title as MISS UNIVERSE 2018. We could never ask for a better woman to stand there,” Emma Strandberg later wrote on Instagram.

Helena Heuser also praised Catriona Gray on Instagram:
“I look up to you in so many ways. You have such a star potential, but yet you’re incredibly humble and down to earth. The Miss Universe Organization just crowned the best Miss Universe ever today!”.
