On Tuesday 20 September 2016, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) hosted a conference titled ‘Power, vulnerability and agency in disaster risk reduction: A knowledge-exchange for sustainable development in Asia’ at Swissôtel Nai Lert in Bangkok. The conference aimed to bring together disaster management authorities, women and social affairs departments, geo-spatial data institutions and NGOs to exchange knowledge of links between disaster risk reduction and gender sensitive actions for sustainable development.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Thailand, Kjetil Paulsen, joined the panel discussion of the opening session of the conference. Norway has supported ADPC through their Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2004, and in their current partnership, it has been an emphasis on gender consideration. The Ambassador highlighted that men and women often work in different places, have different degrees of vulnerability, and different responsibilities in daily life. He emphasised that this has consequences for disaster preparedness reduction and training, and he expressed his hope for a fruitful discussion on this aspect during the conference.
