Norwegian tourist drowns on Phuket’s Karon Beach

A Norwegian tourist drowned after being caught in heavy surf at Karon Beach, on Phuket’s west coast, on Thursday November 14. He was pulled from the sea opposite the Karon Sports Stadium about 2.30pm in the afternoon.

In that way the 55-year old man became the latest drowning victim on Phuket’s popular west coast beaches.

The precise total of drowning victims is known by Phuket authorities, but according to Phuket Wan Tourism News about 30 tourists and locals are believed to have drowned so far this year.

According to the Phuket Gazette the lifeguards performed CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] on the Norwegian man, before he was taken to Patong Hospital by ambulance. But it was too late, and he died on the hospital.

Karon Beach has gained a notorious reputation for surf safety over the years. The tourist-popular beach is prone to large waves and dangerous rips during the southwest monsoon season.

The Norwegian man had been staying alone at the Horizon Karon Beach Resort & Spa.
