A Swedish tourist who had been missing since Friday 21 February was on 25 February 2025 found dead in a forest near his resort in Pai, Mae Hong Son province. Local authorities suspect he may have fallen from a cliff while intoxicated.

According to Pai Police, a villager searching for forest produce discovered the body in the Huai Nam Som forest behind a resort in Mae Na Toeng subdistrict. Emergency responders and police arrived at the scene alongside a doctor from Pai Hospital.

The deceased was identified as Jan Torsten Karlsson, a Swedish national, who had been reported missing since 8:30 AM on 21 February. The resort owner confirmed his identity.

Initial reports suggest that Karlsson had fallen off a cliff and down to the point where he was found. Authorities have sent his body for an autopsy at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital to determine the exact cause of death. The Swedish embassy and the victim’s family have been notified.
