Sweden Helps Protect Children’s Right in Vietnam

Jan Olov Agrell, Minister for Development Cooperation of the Swedish Embassy in Hanoi, on 15 July 2005 signed a Vietnam-Sweden agreement to provide 23.5 million Swedish kroner for a project entitled “Strengthening the implementation of the rights of Vietnamese children in contact with the law and those at risk of being in contact with the law”.
The project aims to reduce the rate of children in trouble with the law, both as victims and perpetrators; to reduce the number of children brought to court; to establish a friendly trial process for children in contact with the law; and to strengthen programmes on crime prevention and education for community re-integration.
The project will also support and strengthen law and policies that protect children’s rights and improve the situation of child criminals and those at risk of being in contact with the law.
Jan Olov Agrell mentioned at the signing ceremony that since 1992, Sweden had a long period of cooperation with Vietnam in the legal sector, including healthcare, education, science and technology, natural resources and environment.
