Singapore Buys Two Second-hand Swedish Subs

Singapore has bought two second-hand Vastergotland-class submarines from Sweden to further boost its fleet, the Defence Ministry said Friday.
“The agreement includes a logistics package and comprehensive training in Sweden for the crews. The two submarines will also be upgraded and converted for operations in tropical waters before they are delivered to Singapore” the Ministry said.
Singapore had acquired four Challenger-class, formerly known as Sjoormen-class, submarines from Swedish Navy in the 1990s and these new two submarines are expected to enter service from 2010 and replace some of Challenger-class submarines.
The Vastergotlands are 48.5 metres long and were launched in Sweden between 1986 and 1988.
It said the agreement was signed between the Singapore Defence Ministry and Kockums AB of Sweden but did not give a value for the deal.
