Telenor Considers Vietnamese MobiFone Cellco Bid

Norwegian telecoms group Telenor said on November 15, 2007 it may bid for a stake in state-owned Vietnamese cellco MobiFone, which is planning an initial public offering in 2008 and is looking to sell a one-third stake as part of a privatisation plan.
“We are interested in Vietnam. We have a representative office in Hanoi and we are well-positioned to participate in the auction,” Telenor Deputy Chief Executive Arve Johansen said at the Mobile Asia Congress in Macau.
Earlier in the week Japan’s NTT DoCoMo said it was ready to bid at least USD1 billion for a 30% stake. Other companies known to be keen to invest include France Telecom, Singapore Telecommunications and Vodafone.
