Norway co-sponsors Human Rights Workshops in Banda Aceh

First Secretary Birgitte Hygen from the Norwegian Embassy together with Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. John Holmes, and Mr. M. Fakhruddin, Head of Legal Bureau of the Indonesian Department of Defence (DEPHAN) on February 5 2008 launched a series of workshops supporting DEPHAN and Tentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) in their implementation of the National Plan of Action for Human Rights (RANHAM), in Banda Aceh
The workshops will promote greater awareness of international humanitarian law and human rights law, including the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which the Government of Indonesia is preparing to ratify this year.  Canada and Norway are co-sponsoring these workshops, in collaboration with Fadillah Rivai Rizki Law Office (FRR).  Participants consist of TNI officers (Army, Navy and Air Force) from seven regions, and the workshops will be conducted in their respective military regional command (KODAM).
From Dili on official business, the Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Bjørn Blokhus added that “Norway sees this project as a continuation of the well established Human Rights dialogue between Norway and Indonesia. We are honoured to cooperate with Canada and Indonesia in this effort to further support the development of human rights in this country”.
