Halonen Begins State Visit to Southeast Asia

President Tarja Halonen began a state visit to Southeast Asia on Saturday. During the week-long trip, Halonen and her husband, Pentti Arajärvi, will travel to Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam. Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen as well as a delegation of business leaders will be travelling with the President.
In Indonesia, Halonen will meet with state leaders and participate in a seminar on Finnish-Indonesian economic relations. Halonen will also visit the region of Aceh, where the peace process and rebuilding after the tsunami will be on the agenda. In addition, she will meet with representatives of women’s organisations in the area.
On Wednesday, Halonen is scheduled to travel to Singapore. She will meet with the country’s leaders and Finns who work in the region.
On Thursday through Saturday, Halonen will be in Vietnam where she will meet with leaders, attend an economic seminar, and participate in discussions on the status of women and equality. Halonen will also visit the Haiphong area. Development projects which have received funding from Finland will be on the agenda.
