Norwegian National Day Celebrations Cancelled

Even though it is “17. mai”, the Norwegian community in Bangkok will not have a chance to celebrate the Constitution Day like they normally do. This year, the celebration dinner was supposed to be at the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit but because of the political tension and the clashing between soldiers and red shirts in the streets of the Thai capital, tonight’s party has been cancelled.

The Norwegians, however, have not been completely deprived of their National Day celebrations as other events have been carried out during the day according to plan.

The celebrations started at 8 a.m. at the German Protestant Church in Thailand with the singing of the Norwegian national anthem followed by a sample of Norwegian delicacies such as smoked salmon, caviar, cheese, liver paté, and meat balls.

The event finished at 10 this morning where after the entire Norwegian community in Bangkok and everyone with a Norwegian association was invited back to the Ambassador residence to participate in the May 17th parade and the games for people of all ages. Everyone was encouraged to bring flags and to wear their national costume.
