Dane Capture Top Ranking in China

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark celebrated becoming the new women’s world number one player after winning against Petra Kvitova at the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing.


The 20-year-old Dane, Caroline Wozniacki has had a great year in tennis, and last night she achieved something only done by 19 women before her. She captured the coveted position as the women’s world number one player. World Tennis Association has ranked tennis players the last 37 years and Caroline Wozniacki joins prominent tennis legends like Billie Jean King, Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Justine Henin.


In the third round of China Open in Beijing, Caroline Wozniacki played against Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and won comfortably 6-3, 6-2. Immediately after the game was concluded, the Lotus Tennis stadium was filled with music and dancers celebrating the young Danish tennis star.


Caroline received the official WTA top position trophy and gave a short speech thanking the audience and explaining that the number one position is a dream come true.


“This is a real big step for me. To be the world No. 1 has always been a dream for me,” Wozniacki said. “It doesn’t feel like it’s real.”


“It doesn’t feel real”, Caroline said after her impressive achievement.


Caroline, who turned pro five years ago, was broken twice in the first set, but held firm to the reins, breaking her opponent six times avenging Kvitova’s 6-2, 6-0 win against her in the fourth round at Wimbledon this year.


After the celebrations at Lotus Stadium, Caroline was congratulated by the Danish Ambassador to China, Mr. Friis Arne Petersen along with staff from the Danish Embassy who all attended the exciting game.


Wozniacki faces off in Friday’s quarterfinal against Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, who downed seventh seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4).
